We established the power of intentions and how one can achieve personal goals through intentions. All thoughts are a form of intentions. Fear based intentions result in what we call evil and love based intentions creates what we call good.

For me it is important to use intentions to accomplish our life purpose. Each of us has a unique life purpose, and we are all here to evolve to a higher level as individuals and as a group. Designing a mission statement, helps us to stay focused on our life purpose. This is something I did as a part of a Tony Robbins workshop 5 years ago. I'm amazed how appropriate it still is today. It is as follows: The purpose of my life is to gratefully express Spirit's love, enjoying passionate connections and facilitating the fun of learning and growing for myself and others. For a few years after I wrote this, I read it almost daily. Then I strayed away, but the intention continued as a part of my consciousness helping to guide me to where I am today. It is time the read it daily, again.

I, also, believe that joining a group intention is very powerful. Group intentions are a way to support the greater good. Whenever I receive an email asking everyone to join together for a common cause, I do my best to participate. Our world exist today exactly how it is as a result of common agreements. If we want to Be the Change, we need to join together creating different agreements. The Institute of Noetic Sciences asked its members to join in a monthly common intention for a global shift in consciousness. We receive an email reminder and a reflection once a month, meditating on this intention on the first day of the month. The intention is as follows:

I picture the world as it is today, knowing that I am a part of this planet's evolutionary design. I choose to live to my fullest capacity, in a spirit of openness, intellectual integrity and freedom.

I am conscious that I have a role in the unfolding story of humanity. I am connected to the whole.

I am prepared to imagine that my intentions can find a deep resonance in the hearts and minds of others.

Together, we will stir the depths of human ingenuity, creativity, and collective healing. Together, we are part of an evolutionary pulse bringing into focus our collective responsibility for planet Earth and its diverse peoples.

My intention is that I may come to a place of wisdom, compassion and an abiding exuberance for serving our common work and the greater good

If you would like this intention sent to you each month go to http://www.noetic.org/ions/HTML/membership/intetion.html . Adding personal mission statements and group intentions to our diets, will help to break our personal and group cycles of destructive behavior. This diet can actually give us the opportunity to participate in our own evolution in a conscious way, helping to bring about a higher level of consciousness for all. It is certainly a way to Be the Change!

Power of Intentions

Setting our intentions is a very powerful tool. I discovered over 30 years ago, if I knew what I wanted I could achieve it. At that time in my life I envisioned certain qualities I wanted in employment. A series of three jobs came my way that didn’t exist before I took them and didn’t exist after I left. Our history books are filled with famous people effecting the direction of society through a vision. I remember how impossible I thought JFK’s announcement was that we would travel to the moon. One of my favorite posters is of a young girl in ballerina garb with the words ‘If you can imagine it you can become it.’ The energy of focus is our most useful behavior.
. Our most difficult challenge is deciding what to focus on. All too often we focus on attaining material goods. I’m not saying that is all wrong. About five years before I moved into my present home I wrote affirmations daily that I would live in a remote mountain place within a half an hour of a town with hiking out my back door. That is an exact description of my present home. But Spirit does throw in some surprises. My husband bought this home about 6 months before we met! I thought I would find a home with my partner not find my partner in the home.
Writing daily affirmations are one way to keep our focus. Just the act of deciding how to word your affirmations is the most important and most difficult part of this process. It is an opportunity to decide what you really want. The year I decided to retire from teaching, I took a workshop from James Twyman. During that workshop I had the opportunity to focus my energies on my next ‘career’. I knew I wanted to make a difference on a much larger scale than the classroom. I had lots of ideas about how I was going to do it. Two years later none of those ideas have come to fruition. I have been enjoying retirement working as a tutor, being active in some local organizations, reading a lot of fiction, spending quality time with friends and family, and exercising. Meanwhile, a little voice in my head would say what about your dream and another little voice would say it isn’t time yet, you need this break.
The time has arrived and the vehicle is 6Friends(read my last posting to learn about 6Friends). I had no idea the scope and breath of 6Friends nor the level of my future involvement, when I first read about it in an email from IONS (the Institute of Noetic Sciences). Spirit, the energy of like intentions, the Field, what ever you want to call it brought us together at the time that they need another major player with my skills and background. No one at 6Friends has seen my resume (because they listen to that little voice in their heads, too) but if they did they would see a series of experiences preparing me for the position I now hold with them. This organization not only has the intention of changing society to a peaceful, environmentally conscious world culture, it has the tools to do it. If you are inspired by their vision, there are big and small ways to contribute. We are looking for ‘Village Coordinators’ who would help 6 schools be a virtual community. You can also look to your right, right now and click on the ads on your screen. Just clicking on them brings in revenue for 6Friends. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BUY ANYTHING!!!
Spirit creates our intentions, so make sure your diet is filled with what you really want in your life. I am more convinced than ever we truly can ‘Be the Change’!

Back from Costa Rica

Getting all my routines back in place after a vacation has been a struggle. Since writing is a new part of my diet, it has been one of the last to come back on board. Costa Rica is a wonderful place. I highly recommend it as a destination for a multitude of different types of vacations from eco-adventures to playing in the surf. Both the climate and the people welcomed me.

Seeing endangered squirrel monkeys and blue morpho butterflies up close in their natural environment, made the importance of protecting our environment more real for me. Since world peace and protecting the environment are two of my important issues, I was delighted to read that the latest Nobel Peace Prize winner, Wangari Maathai, is an environmentalist. As Wangari says, “In honoring me, the Nobel Committee was urging us to see the link between peace and a well-managed environment.” (Oprah, June 2005, page 72). She goes on to explain that wars are often fought over resources. The scarcer our resources, the more likelihood there is of a conflict occurring. So my two issues have become one, which is especially delightful for a Gemini.

Ever since I began this blog, I have been looking for a nonprofit organization that either supported world peace or the environment to contribute our meager proceeds. Now that I get the connection, it's not surprising that I have found the nonprofit. Shortly before I went on vacation, I pursued a path leading to the discovery of an organization called 6-Friends. Each door opened up to a flourish of delightful inspirations and opportunities. 6-Friends is a worldwide educational program formed to promote global peace and understanding by connecting geographically diverse communities developing global citizenship and environmental responsibility. They begin by connecting schools from the 6 populated continents forming a virtual “village”. Students get to know each other by working on common projects (often environmental in nature) sharing with each other on their own intranet site. If you go to their website http://www.6-friends.org/ you can learn more about this project. What little money this blog is making will be donated to 6-Friends. Now that we have a specific nonprofit to support, I hope it will inspire you to click on more ads. It is my plan to also volunteer my time by being a village coordinator for 6-Friends. As my involvement increases, I will share these experiences on Dieting with Spirit. I know my diet will be enriched by adding 6-Friends. I hope the reciprocal will also be true.

April 20, 2005 : Earth Day

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let the beauty we love be what we do. There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.
Rumi

There are hundreds of ways to honor Mother Earth and all of them honor us as well. Earth Day is every day. Dedicating April 22nd to the Earth is a great way to bring our energies together recommitting our intentions to respect the Earth. It is similar to New Year's, a time to make personal resolutions to support the health of our planet. My energy and heart are focused on Mother Earth. I'm filled with gratitude for all her gifts. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat are just her essential survival gifts. Her splendor, inspiration, and challenges enrich us every moment. One of my Earth Day resolutions is to write about actions I especially like to do for the Earth and express my deep love and compassion for Mother Earth.

Supporting organic farming is one way to support our health and also planetary health. The increase in organic farming has grown significantly, only because there is a market. WE are the market! By choosing to spend a few dollars more a week on our groceries, we are getting the highest quality food available and we are giving to Mother Earth. I look forward to our local farmers' market, because it is especially nice to connect with the actual farmers. My parting comment after each purchase is thank you for growing organic. Now I say to you, thank you for buying organic.

The development of renewable fuels has become very personal, since my sons are part of Blue Sun Biodiesel. When they helped begin this company about 5 years ago, very few people had heard of Biodiesel. My computer stills underlines it in red. Now, maybe 10% of our population is familiar with the product, diesel fuel made from plant or animal oil. I do my best to raise public awareness by mentioning Blue Sun as often as possible. I'm sure people think I'm just bragging about my sons (I am very proud of their contribution to changing the world), but I'm really doing my part to raise the awareness level. Whether the actual story of the 100th monkey is true or not, the concept that ideas grow exponentially after the first 10% is an established marketing theory. So if you want to learn more about Biodiesel just do a Google search for thousands of articles. If you want to learn about Blue Sun, their website is gobluesun.com. Biodiesel isn't the only alternative fuel in its infancy. We can help the whole industry along by showing interest. Lets make a date with the planet to just test drive a hybrid or diesel (asking about biofuels). Lets ask our local governments and public transportation systems what their plans for alternative fuel are. Most importantly lets make our next car purchase a conscious one. Remember, we are the market!

Recycling has become a more active part of my life the past couple years. Because we live in a rural area, we bring our recycling to a center. We sort it ourselves, we smile and greet our neighbors, and we celebrate the pounds of cardboard, plastic, aluminum cans, glass bottles, and paper we see being saved from the dump. Instead of a chore, I view it as an elixir of joy for which I'm very grateful.

Attending a local Earth Day celebration has been a part of my life for many years. The last few years I have helped with a booth. Writing this has given me a new idea for a booth, Earth Day resolutions. I'm missing our local Earth Day fair this year, because I will be in Costa Rica. So instead of standing in a booth that says save the rainforest, I'll be standing in a rainforest. This, also, means that I won't be writing a posting next week. I'm sure I'll have lots to share when I return. Meanwhile, let's keep Being the change for our sake and for Mother Earth which is of course one in the same.

April 11, 2005

If you have read my previous postings, you might remember that the first dictionary definition of spirit is breathe. Several activities have caused me to focus on breath this week. I recently purchased a biofeedback computer game, The Journey to Wild Divine from naturestapestry.com (a conscious webstore with great prices). It is an adventure with terrific graphics that provides challenges requiring body-mind mastery. One of the main tools for changing the message my body is sending through the biofeedback sensors is breathing. The game teaches you several breathing techniques. One of the consultants for Wild Divine is Anna Coy, a breath facilitator. If you want to read more about her programs you can go to her website, inspiringyourlife.com. What I'm learning by traveling on this computer journey is that changing the way I breathe can reduce stress. It seems to relax my muscles and open my mind to a multitude of possibilities. I feel more alive which makes sense since breath is life.

My attention to breath came up again on one of my favorite Yoga videos, Yoga for Weight Loss, produced by Yoga Zone It refers to conscious yoga breathing as a key component to weight loss. Weight gain is often related to restlessness, which can be subdued with deep yogic breathing. I'm sure I stop breathing every time I think about eating something I crave. Stopping our breath is the fastest way I know of to feel deprived. Maybe the panicked feeling that comes over me, which I associate with hunger, is really oxygen deprivation. It seems like training myself to take a few deep breaths before putting any food in my month would contribute to more conscious eating habits.

My husband has these wonderful little booklets from his grandfather from the School of Yoga. So I read lesson 2, "Secrets of Dynamic Breathing”. Yogis have taught breathing exercises for 3,000 years for both physical and mental health. They recommend daily breathing exercises for 3 reasons.

By increasing the inhalation we bring a larger supply of oxygen to the bloodstream,

By breathing in and out deeply we exercise the internal organs,

By exhaling twice as long as we inhale we draw more waste out.

All three of these contribute to better health, reduced aging, and more mental clarity. I'm sure you have heard that we only use 10% of our brain. Coincidentally, we use only 10% of our lungs, too. It makes sense to me, if we use more of our lungs, we will use more of our brain.

Yogis recommend nasal breathing, because the nasal passage functions as a filter for dust particles and even bacteria. As we age our breathing muscle, the diaphragm, becomes weaker, unless we exercise it. Its possible to exercise daily without strengthening our diaphragm. Here are two specific exercises we can do anywhere and anytime.

First, breathe in through your nose bringing as much air as you can into your abdomen, continue inhaling bringing the air up into your chest, and then exhale for twice as long contracting your abdomen squeezing out every particle of air.

For the second exercise breathe in the same way, and then expel the air through the nose by an inward jerk of the abdomen. The stronger your abs the more like a sneeze this action will be.

I'm inspired to add breathing exercises to my diet by doing 6 of each of these daily. This will not only increase my energy, general health and mental alertness, but I bet it will also reduce my middle age stomach protrusion, which seems to be there no matter how little I weigh. If you want to join me, put sticky notes up in key places like in your car, on your computer, and/or bathroom mirror saying ‘breathe’. The more we consciously practice deep breathing the deeper our regular breathing becomes.

As Anna Coy says, “ Every breath you take either says yes to life or it says no to life.” Lets say yes to life experiencing oneness with spirit, being the change, by breathing deeply.

April 3, 2005

Dieting with Spirit is creating an increase in personal growth for me. I hope it's having a similar affect on you. I pay attention in a deeper more reflective way to all I hear, see, and read. One of my original intentions to network a community is happening, too. About 20 of you have opted to be on a group email. If you haven't and want to be let me know. I have met one new person through this blog. Rennie Davis sent me a 30-page document written by him titled "A New Humanity/ Community Manual" It is about creating a ‘New Humanity’, which is a term Deepak Chopra uses in his book, PEACE IS THE WAY. The document begins with:

“A new humanity is the decision to evolve. The evolution of humanity involves a great shift of understanding. Changing ourselves, we change our world.”

When his website is created, I will post it. If you want your own copy of the manual you can email Rennie at rennie@ffh.org. I am so excited to connect with others who have similar ideas. My heart is filled with gratitude.

A ‘great shift of understanding’ means that changing ourselves begins with changing our thoughts. Negative thoughts create a frightening world. My ‘monkey mind’ can find an endless list of possibilities for being afraid. One way I shut it up is the exercise I shared previously, listing things I am grateful for. Negative thoughts are difficult to extinguish, unless we have positive ones to replace them. When I tell a young child to stop picking his nose, I hand him a tissue. Gratitude is one tissue. What are some others? My list begins with trust, curiosity, passion, respect, excitement, acceptance, understanding, compassion, responsibility, and love. What would you add?

A ‘New Humanity’ is free of judgment and blame. Even though I never allowed blame to be used in my classroom, I notice it popping up its ugly head in my relationship with my husband and with current political events. In both circumstances, I become a helpless victim by blaming. The tissue for blame is taking responsibility for our part of every action and interaction. This is the second time I've written this piece, because the first was lost by the computer or by me. I have a choice. I could blame the computer, or I can take responsibility, acknowledging I did something to erase it. I heard an American of Iraqi descent speak last night. Several times she took responsibility as an American citizen for our government's behavior toward her relatives. It was obvious that she made a conscious effort not to blame. I'm sure her ‘evolution in understanding’ about blame is part of what is empowering her to give public talks.

Blame is insidious in our culture. Who or what do you blame? The first step to change is to notice, be the observer observing ourselves. Then choose one small segment of the behavior to alter. Remember, change is a process, and only a 10% change is usually long term. Sometimes focusing on a small change can transform into a ‘great shift in understanding’ especially if it comes from the heart. For example, I can change my blaming thoughts toward my husband to ones of responsibility, because I love him and myself. I know that blame isn't a loving action. My focus of replacing blame in this part of my life with responsibility can extend to my whole ‘diet’ effortlessly.

March 28, 2005

I heard a different approach to health mentioned in two different contexts this week. It resonates with what I believe, so I what to share my version of this approach. First, an acupuncturist, who we “coincidentally” ran into at a local restaurant, said the Chinese treat disease by changing the environment. Then Bill Mayer on his HBO show Real Time (which is the only TV show I make an effort to watch regularly) said he believed changing the environment is the way to treat disease. They both were referring to our body as the environment where disease resides. How do we effect our body? I think of two ways, what we take in and what we eliminate. We take in through the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the thoughts we think.

The best foods to eat are unprocessed organic whole foods. When I'm choosing food, I ask myself how far is this from the real thing. Oatmeal is closer than Cheerios to the oat berry, but steel cut oats are even better. Eating a whole orange is better than drinking orange juice, but drinking orange juice is better than drinking a fruit drink or pop. The more fresh fruits and vegetables we eat the better, and the more of these that are raw the better. Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of Eat to Live, recommends a minimum of 4 pieces of fruit, a pound of raw vegetables and a pound of cooked vegetables per day. If you succeed in eating all those vegetables you won't have room for any junk food! I attempt this every day by eating a very large salad as one meal and then a stir-fry and or/soup for another meal. The following is an easy and very nutritious soup. My first recipe!

Lightly steam a bunch of fresh greens (chard, spinach, beet greens, kale) or a mixture of these

Juice of one lemon or the whole lemon peeled

1 Cup of liquid (water from steaming, soy milk or tomato juice)

Put greens, lemon, and liquid in blender (a Vita Mix works best) and liquefy

Season to taste with ground black pepper, cayenne, basil, and/or oregano

(I don't use salt or fat in any of my cooking)

For a more hardy meal add cooked rice or barley.

Jim Sloman on his beautiful website, http://www.mayyoubehappy.com/, says a vegan diet is a nonviolent diet. What we are within, we are without. For a change in diet, or anything else, it needs to come from the heart. Remember change is a process and only a 10% change is likely to be long term. What small way do you want to be the change this week? How do you want to contribute to your body being a healthier environment?

March 20, 2005

Water! A scientific mystery, the essential ingredient for life, considered sacred by many, and polluted by most.

Even how much we should consume has become controversial. 8 eight ounce glasses or more a day has been the undisputed recommendation for as long as I can remember. Yet just this year a doctor published research that we could drink too much water, and in Oprah’s April 2005 magazine she says 8 glasses of water is unnecessary. I guess I'm old fashion, because I think 8 glasses of spring water per day is the most important gift you can give your body. I drink two 16 ounce glasses of warm water first thing each morning. That is half of my gift right there. The most body friendly water is close to body temperature. I try to avoid ice water.

Hydrating ourselves awakens the brain much more than caffeine. Whenever you feel tired, in a mental fog, like you need a caffeine hit drink 8 ounces of spring water before (hopefully instead of) having coffee or pop. Spring water, organic green and herbal teas, fresh squeezed fruit juice, and soy milk are the only healthy beverages I know.

About 5 years ago my husband and I did the Tony Robbin's Life Mastery program. Tony is a big advocate of water. My husband increased his consumption of water substantially and has continued to do so ever since. He says a couple of pints of water in the morning creates the same state as meditating for a hour. Whenever I am emotionally irrational, my husband asks me if I'm hydrated. Even though it is irritating as hell, he is usually right. After a glass of water, I can talk much more rationally.

In the movie “What the Bleep Do We Know” (if you haven't seen it the DVD was released March 15th), Dr. Masaru Emoto’s research on water is featured. Emoto’s work suggest that water is a repository of our thoughts and emotions. Other scientist have found that water transfers the electromagnetic energy of the substances exposed to it. Thus explaining how homeopathy and acupuncture work. You can replicate Emoto’s work by storing your drinking water in a container with a word like peace, joy, love. I've also read that just holding a glass of water in both hands affirming its positive effects on your body is effective. The words I'm using are

Spirit, please work with this water for my highest good. I ask this with heart filled gratitude. Thank you.

If we create life with our thoughts, both of these actions my be more the power of suggestion than an electromagnetic change in the water. But who cares? I'm committed to doing it as part of my diet with spirit. If you join me, please let me know your results in the comment section. Increasing the amount of water we drink is a small change that effects mind, body and spirit leading to other changes.

A well hydrated person is a more peaceful person.

March 13, 2005

I've been asking myself why has it taken me so long to write about food. After all, I named this blog, Dieting with Spirit, partly because my long struggle with weight and food addictions is finally resolved. During the last 25 years, I have eaten some sort of vegetarian diet. Most of the last 25 years, I have been about 20 lb. over weight. When I go to vegetarian potlucks, everyone else is skinny. What is wrong with me? I finally realized I'm a carb addict. I love carbohydrates and eat way too many of them. By the time I found this out, there was no way I was going back to eating meat. So what was an overweight, carb addict, vegetarian to do? Go on Atkins! Impossible!

I have finally found a manner of living that works for me. It's a vegan (no animal products of any type) diet, which limits complex carbs to 1 cup a day and oils to 1 tsp. of flax seed and 1 ounce of raw nuts. I fill up on vegetables, fruits and at least 1 cup of beans. Not only, have I lost that 20 lbs. for good, I also, have more energy during the day and sleep more peacefully at night.

I want to make sure all of you know, I don’t think my way is the only way. If you're struggling with weight and/or health issues, read Dr. Joel Fuhrman book, Eat to Live for details on the diet I have been following and the rational. As a physician he treats most diseases with a 6 weeks, cleansing, vegan diet. Eating for our health, rather than exclusively for pleasure, is a radical change. In order to be the change effectively, we must remember change is a process not an event. Each day I affirm and visualize with gratitude and spirit making healthy choices in all aspect of my life.

March 6, 2005

As I was waking this morning, I experienced being a part of a circle. I was holding hands with all of humanity in a circle of love. Thank you, Spirit, for this image of oneness. My ritual for going to sleep and waking up is to list all that I am grateful for. It's a lot better than counting sheep and my sleep feels more peaceful. Here are just some of the benefits of gratitude.

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. … Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”
– – Melody Beattie

Gratitude is a part of my diet (remember, means a manner of living). I believe we create life with our thoughts. We all have experiences that could be called bad or good, but it is how we think about them and consequently respond to them that creates who we are. It's the old analogy is your glass half full or half empty. The half empty people call the half full people Pollyanna inferring foolishness. In defense of us, Pollyannas, it's not foolishness. It's a choice. I choose to focus on the good parts of my life. Whatever we focus on we create. For example, a friend recently asked me how she could create more and benefit from her random psychic experiences. My respond to her and all of us is to honor them. Write them down. Ask how you could respond. Then listen and choose to act when it feels right. For a non-techie setting up a blog is much harder than writing. I'm inspired to write. That's what I want to do. Putting ads on my site is the current struggle. These ads are an important part of my vision. If you visit Dieting with Spirit often and click on the ads, you will be contributing to non-profits organizations (I'm open to your suggestions) and my attendance at conferences, which I will then share with you. This is what I call a win-win arrangement. Win-win solutions have been a specialty of mine for many years. It is something I taught to my students and colleagues. It often requires getting off a position and opening up to a multitude of possibilities. The important aspect is that the people involved focus on the common outcome that benefits all of them. Dieting With Spirit creates a win for me, because I get to fulfill my need to learn, grow and contribute ideas and $$$. It's a win for you because you get to learn, grow and contribute your ideas. Plus, it is really you that is contributing money by clicking on the ads. You do not have to buy anything. The businesses that are paying Dieting With Spirit are winning because they get exposure and an occasional purchase. This must be a win for them or they wouldn't be doing it.

Now, it's time to get on to the subject of Dieting With Spirit. I'm thinking that multiple short postings per week instead of one long posting might be more readable. Let me know if this length is better than the previous one.

Remember, I wrote that diet means a manner of living. Each of us consciously or unconsciously (I suspect it is a blend of the two) chooses our life diet.

What does spirit mean? I just read the dictionary definition, which is quiet long. Most of it relates to ideas I have and some were a surprise. The first definition is “breathe.” Lets just breathe with that one. Spirit is the word I choose to use for God, because it helps eliminate childhood stereotypes of a Zeus like figure reigning from above. Spirit feels closer, pervasive, and omnipresent. Another definition for spirit is “the immaterial intelligent or sentient part of a person”. To me that means the Divine, the unexplainable, and the great mystery part of us. Even scientists are considering the idea that our consciousness is non-local, meaning they can't find a place in our physical body where it resides. The other meaning of spirit that relates to this site is “a lively, energetic, animated, brisk quality”. It is my hope that Dieting With Spirit has this quality, and all of the lives it touches will be more spirited
